Java quake-toll crosses 5,800: Medical teams, supplies arrive

hospitals overflowing with earthquake victims

The quake struck Java has by now witnessed a death of more than 5,800. Aid in large quantities has started flowing into the affected areas, with mobile medical team deployed on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. Roads have got congested, which in turn are hampering access to more remote areas. As a result, several survivors have spent their fourth night after the shake without shelter or supplies.

The quake with its 6.3 magnitude eventually injured thousands, leaving as many as 200,000 without homes. The relief operation has gathered pace with donations flowing in from at least 22 countries around the world.

The UN has set up a co-ordination centre close to the Yogyakarta airport, as goods are brought by planes landing here. To help treat the injured, more international medical teams from US and Japan have flown in. Five tonnes of medical supplies have also arrived from China.

With countries joining hands, health crisis fears appearing to be receding, according to aid workers.
