Is climate change an issue of global injustice threatening human rights?

To tackle climate change, more attention is needed to be given to human rights, according to former Irish President Mary Robinson. So, is the phenomenon now an issue of global injustice? The former President will be arguing this in a lecture at Chatham House, a think-tank in London.

According to the ex-UN high commissioner for human rights,

The policymakers should adopt ‘a radically different approach’ for it.

Rich nations should meet their climate change obligations.

Multilateral efforts leading to global eradication of smallpox and the phasing out of CFC gases should be revived.

She is expected to say,

We can no longer think of climate change as an issue where we the rich give charity to the poor to help them cope.

Climate change has already begun to affect the fulfillment of human rights and our shared human rights framework entitles and empowers developing countries and impoverished communities to claim protection of these rights.

According to the World Bank’s former chief economist Sir Nicholas Stern’s recent report, global warming could shrink the global economy by 20%.

So, action should be taken immediately, as repairing it now would cost just 1% of the world’s gross domestic product every year!
