A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck near the eastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi, jolting its central parts. But, according to meteorologists, there were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.

Centered 60 kilometers (37.2 miles) under the sea floor, the earthquake struck the island 102 kilometers (63.2 miles) northeast of Luwuk in Central Sulawesi province at 3:15 am (21:15 GMT Saturday), the meteorology and geophysics agency informed.

The temblor was said to have been felt moderately in Luwuk and in Poso town. It shook the provincial capital Palu only lightly.

Sutiono, an agency spokesman said,

We are still in contact with our local offices to see whether there is any damage or casualties, but so far we have received reports of none.
