Ice age fly found alive in Scotland!

under a decaying tree

Britain considered as one of the most studied and explored countries in the world have shown that it still preserve some of the undiscovered and unusual lives on Earth. Scientists here have discovered two new fly species, both in the Scottish mountains and are spotted just only about 50 miles (80km) apart. To add to, finding two species so close together is particularly a rare concept.

It is during a survey of flora and fauna on the Cairngorms, the black Christii fly — Ectaetia christii and a fungus gnat — Creagdhubhia mallochorum are found. Both these insects are about 2mm long. The new gnat is said not to have bitten people but fed on dead fungi.

Alongside, scientists also identified a new type of lichen, named Rimularia globulosa, and several other plants and insects never seen before in Britain.
