How Eco-friendly Is Your Barbecue?

Do you know, 65.4% of UK households now own a barbecue of some type, a 57% increase since 1999? The National BBQ Association reports this. While with the warmer summers, the perfect barbecue days are in, the “grill jockeys” kick up big debates on what type of fuel to use.

Though most purists, from a culinary point of view, agree that the superior fuel is proper charcoal, — and not propane gas, or ‘charcoal’ briquettes, this is fast changing in favor of gas. Charcoal briquettes release 105 times more carbon monoxide per unit of energy than propane. More significantly, they also produce many more particulates in the form of smoke as well as harmful ‘volatile organic compounds’ (VOCs), according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
