Hippie Chimps' Disappearing Dramatically in Congo

The gentle “hippie chimp” are known for resolving squabbles through sex rather than violence. The bonobo are disappearing dramatically and scientists are struggling hard to save these.

Their tasty meat is the enemy of their lives. And many villagers who are illegally hunting the wiry, wizen-faced apes don’t realize how close their prey is to extinction! Sally Coxe of the Washington-based Bonobo Conservation Initiative said, “Bonobos are an icon for peace and love, the world’s ‘hippie chimps… to let them die off would be a catastrophe.”

The species especially vulnerable as the female bonobos give birth to a single infant only once every five years, despite all the sex. Living high off the ground in treetop nests, the bonobo, or pan paniscus, is native only to the vast rain forest in this huge central African nation.
