Gorillas Pass Along Different Traits Socially, Not Genetically: Study

Variations in the behavior of different groups of the apes cannot be explained by genetics or environment alone – according to a study. Behavioral surveys of the roughly 370 gorillas in U.S. zoos are made. The surveys showed 48 variations in how individual groups of the apes make signals, use tools and seek comfort. Tara Stoinski of Zoo Atlanta and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International said this.

Stoinski found very distinct pattern of similarities and differences between groups. This fact suggests that the gorillas do not pass along the different traits genetically, but socially. And it is a hallmark of culture. It is at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the results were presented.
