In a regime distraught with civil war, there remains no compassion for endangered species as they are poached and hunted for lucrative gains and bush meat.
Rebels in eastern Congo have killed and eaten two silverback mountain gorillas, according to conservationists.

A dismembered gorilla corpse was found in Virunga National Park, another had been found on the same spot on 5th January. Rebels loyal to local warlord, Laurent Nkunda are being blamed for the profanity.

Paulin Ngobobo, a senior park warden stated:

We learned that the remaining gorillas are extremely vulnerable – the rebels are after the meat, and it is not difficult for them to find and kill the few gorillas that remain.

The victims are those unfortunate gorillas that had become friendly with traitor human beings. The death of these loyal, gentle animals is a loss to the natural heritage of the nation. The Virunga National Park has already suffered due to extensive deforestation. Also at the worst end are the hippo populations whose numbers are also being reduced by the rebels.

Rangers risk death in war ravaged country, where animals no longer have a home.
