Germany allies with Italy to claim Bruno's body from the Bavarian hunters

bruno the bear 2263A brown bear that was killed last summer by the Bavarian hunters has led to a diplomatic row between Germans and Italians.

Bruno, the famous brown bear, wandered from Italy to Germany via Austria devoured 30 sheep, four rabbits and a guinea pig before it was gunned down by Bavarian hunters.

Bruno was the first brown bear in 170 years to be spotted in Germany but was unfortunate enough to be gunned down by the Bavarians. But Bruno’s story is still going strong.

The Italian government has claimed that Bruno is Italian state property and they want his body back. But the Bavarians have rejected the idea straight away, by saying that since Bruno died on Bavarian soil – the carcass is theirs to keep. The Bavarians plan to stuff him and put him on display in a local museum.

With the pressure mounting from the Italian government, Germany’s federal government tried to intervene on the side of the Italians. But the Bavarian state environment minister is more than happy to refuse the german government’s request.

Meanwhile, Bruno the bear is resting in peace in a freezer somewhere in Bavaria.
