After Cyclone Larry struck northern Queensland in March 2006, thousands of flying foxes like this one seemingly disappeared. Locating them now will heolp scientists answer important questions about the protected species.

After Cyclone Larry slammed into Australia’s Queensland state in March, about 10,000 flying foxes disappeared. According to zoologist Louise Shilton, Larry appears to have scattered the local species crow-sized, fruit-eating bats to distant places.

Though she needs to find them for her ongoing project to monitor the usually poorly distributed animals, it’s no easy studying animals you can’t find! Shilton told Discovery News,

We need to be providing the best possible population data and we can’t monitor them without knowing where they roost.
