The flash flooding caused by the burst of the Dechatu river that swept through an eastern Ethiopian town over the weekend has killed nearly 200 people, with 300 others still missing, according to police source.
On Saturday, the river burst flooded Dire Dawa town overnight. In the process, it drowned many or buried them in sandy debris, while they were sleeping. Clearing sandy debris with bulldozers on Sunday, the police recovered bodies leading to the rise in the death toll.
The lush destroyed at least 220 homes in the Ethiopia’s lowlands’ town. It is located 525 km (326 miles) east of the capital Addis Ababa.
