Dying Seas: Dead Sea Is Evaporating and Shrinking to Death

dead sea

The still mystifying Dead Sea is slowly evaporating and hence shrinking! And it may become the dry sea in another three decades. Environmentalists are highly concerned and are working to save it. It is said to be falling by a meter in depth every year. As the sea’s water disappears, it creates large sinkholes. And it makes it dangerous to even approach the sea in certain spots.

The Dead Sea has been central to civilization for 10,000 years. Jericho, the oldest city on Earth, is here. Because it is so low – 1,300 feet below sea level – it’s closest to all the deep Earth’s minerals and, most visibly, the Earth’s salt. Thus the Sea is 10 times more salty than the Mediterranean and three times more salty the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Believing to have healing properties, tourists flock here just to float and bathe in its rich mineral mud, as one can’t drown even if one tries. To save the shrinking sea, some have proposed building a canal from the Red Sea to bring some much-needed water.
