Do lobsters change shell color deep under water? Finding to make lobster fishery more lucrative

red shelled lobster dish 9Commercial rock lobster fishery can increase their value once they reveal if they change their shell color as they move from deep water. To make lobster fishery more lucrative, the scientists are up with their gloves to find it in south-east South Australia.

Dr Adrian Linnane said,

At the moment, there is quite a high abundance of lobsters in deep water but they tend to be more speckled and white. What we’re trying to do is take those deep water speckled lobsters, move them in shore and hope they turn red.

The Research and Development Institute of the state is very optimistic with the market value of the sea creature once the finding reveals the fact. As for example, the red shelled lobsters are sold at premium prices in overseas markets, especially in China.

With their future interest in the research, the local fishers will be helping the researchers move and tag lobsters in their finding — if the fish survive and change color.
