Denmark: Deep-Sea Species Threatened, Halt in Fishing Urged

Several deep-sea species including the orange roughy, the round-nosed grenadier, the Portuguese dogfish and the leaf-scaled gulper shark are threatened due to indiscriminate fishing in the deep-sea. To meet this crisis, a Denmark-based marine research group called for a halt in fishing on Tuesday, as all their evidences shows a high current fishing pressure on these stocks. The Copenhagen-based group, International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) will be urging sharp cuts in fishing quotas for some species until stocks can sufficiently ricochet to sustain catches. Appealing for a complete revision of deep-sea fishing policies, including a ban on netting porbeagle and basking shark, the group will also release a report this Friday.
