Delhi to face environmental crisis, if seals recycled waste collecting shops!

If you really want to see government myopia in action, you only have to read the newspaper these days about sealing commercial establishments in india’s capital – Delhi. Without so much as a passing moment of doubt, the establishments included as commercial are kabari shops (recycling waste collecting shops).

Importance of the recycled waste collecting shops
Anyone living in the city will know how much effort and money the city spent training its citizens to segregate and recycle waste. But whether you segregate your waste or not, it goes to one of many actors: — your waste collector, a rag picker or, if it is high value, to the kind of kabari who comes cycling and buys your waste. All of these will eventually sell to the kabaris, scattered conveniently in different parts of the city.

Between 9 and 59% of the city’s waste ends up here and is recycled in what has turned out to be one of the world’s most efficient systems. Go into a kabari recycling station and you will be amazed to find even things like safety pins, tiny bits of plastic and an old, scratched CD.

Problem, if such shops are sealed
As of now, a parade of private companies, adding glamour to trash, continue to depend on this sector to earn their mega bucks. It is the law of the land that demands we segregate and recycle. Most Delhi residents do that only via the kabari.

But, it seems, our government won’t let us recycle any more! It won’t even let the system of recycle continue! In its quest to seal commercial activities, it has dug up a historic bias and is trampling on an essential environmental service.

Solution
The Hindustan Times rightly observes the only way for retrieving this disgraceful lack of understanding is to — remove the kabari from the list of type commercial establishments to be sealed. In the next stage, we could look at improving how these works.

But, let’s see some common sense on the government’s parts.
