Declining Pollinators Are Risking Plant Extinction

pollination

We all know that pollinators like birds and bees play a vital role in maintaining the world’s most diverse ecosystems – plants. Many of us also know that these pollinators are declining dramatically. And the consequence – it is driving the world’s most diverse ecosystems at risk of extinction! Did you ever think of this? A new study has analyzed hundreds of field studies investigating fruit production in hundreds of wild plant species to come to this conclusion.

“More may have to be done to protect the Earth’s most biologically rich areas!” The result is reported in the article, “Pollination Decays in Biodiversity Hotspots” published in the January 17 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and is available online at the academy’s website at www.pnas.org.
