Controversy Over Risks From Farm Chemicals

There will be five-meter no-spray zones between fields and homes. A report by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (RCEP) recommended this last year. But the Advisory Committee on Pesticides (ACP) rejects this measure as “arbitrary” and a “disproportionate” response to scientific uncertainty. An independent scientific committee, the ACP advises government on the control of pests.

Professor David Coggon, chair of the ACP when the response was written agreed with some of the recommendations made in the report. He said the committee strongly disagreed with the recommendation to protect against possible adverse health effects by placing a five meter buffer zone alongside residential property.
