China's largest lake shrinking alarmingly

lake qinghai shrinking

Lake Qinghai, the holy river to ethnic Tibetans, is distinctly shrinking. Declining rainfall and desertification are two major factors responsible for the shrinking phenomenon, though some also blame global warming for it. Overgrazing is another culprit partly behind the lake’s shrinking.

Water levels of the Lake have dropped by almost 13 feet over the past three decades! Moreover, a huge area, half the size of Singapore, has turned into dry land, the state media said.

The 60 miles+ long salt-water lake is being fed by rivers, but their number has reduced to half in just 50 years. The salinity of the lake too, has increased to a great level. Fishing is a great economy derived from this shrinking lake.
