Can We Address the Energy Efficiency Programs An 'About-face' By Bush Administration?

With the soaring price of gasoline and winter heating, President George W. Bush’s administration provides a short-term answer – conservation. The answer even includes the unveiling of a cartoon mascot dubbed “Energy Hog”. It is to bring home the case for lowering thermostats.

But the ‘discomposed’ consumer and energy efficiency advocates are complaining that the president’s budget goes the other direction. It is the budget sent to Congress this week that cuts energy conservation programs.

It’s “a remarkable about-face” by the administration “after spending several months extolling the potential for energy efficiency,” said Kateri Callahan, president of the Alliance to Save Energy, a private advocacy group that has worked with the Energy Department on promoting conservation.
