Can global warming be curbed by assigning an international carbon pie?

factory emission 9Increasing carbon emissions is raising concerns about its serious consequences across the world. So, to curb this emission leading to global warming, an international carbon pie needs to be appointed. A pie like this would be employed for setting up an upper limit on emissions of carbon per person across the world.

It would help some poorer countries make money from richer nations, which are responsible for emitting more carbon per capita.

Not taken into consideration, the energy conservation and fuel efficiency being achieved, Wallace Broecker, a researcher of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory said,

Unless you constrain the amount (of fossil fuels) that can be burned, you’re never going to bring carbon dioxide down.

I’m not saying for a minute that we don’t need all those things. But they will fall short.

He concluded that the world will be struck with higher temperatures for centuries, just enough a time for melting Greenland’s ice and raising sea level by several meters! But, with this carbon pie approach – i.e setting an upper limit to the total carbon-amount added by humans to the atmosphere — it would be easier to cut emissions by.

Do you know, humans burn and release about four gigatons of carbon into the air every year? Along with another four gigatons of carbon being released by wildfires, the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rise by about one part per million (ppm) every year!
