Disposable diapers, or “nappies,” are swamping landfill sites in Britain. Local officials across Britain are offering incentives to parents who stop using these disposables. Including paying parents up to $140 (80 pounds) for swapping disposable diapers for the more environmentally friendly reusable cloth diapers, various local authorities are offering various incentives. Before being toilet-trained, an average child uses nearly 6,000 diapers. And to bury approximately three billion of the disposable type in landfills, it’s costing hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. A disposable diaper is discarded every 1.1 seconds in Britain and nearly all end up in landfills, some officials calculate. But are traditional nappies entirely environmentally friendly? How can the requirement of additional electricity to wash and dry them be justified?
