Bizarre Invader Smothering Ocean Floor, Making It Hostile for Fish and Weeds

sea squirts

There have been complains that man has been making the seafloor inhospitable to fish eggs pollution it by various ways. But, another bizarre marine invader is dramatically smothering shellfish beds, making the ocean floor a hostile atmosphere for fish-egg breeding.

They are discovered as small, dense mats of a strange gooey creature on the ocean floor more than 100 miles offshore. Within a year, the sea squirts had carpeted more than 6 square miles there and kept going. Showing up in enormous colonies, the stringy squirts were spread to new places along the shoreline with fishermen fearing their increasing smothering shellfish beds.

Though they are determined to stop other marine invaders, — to add to the pessimism, –State officials have surrendered any hope of slowing the sea squirts’ goopy spread, damaging the atmosphere for fish-egg laying.
