Bill to Ban Using Toxins in Cell Phones, iPods

cell phones have toxinsHazardous materials are used for making cell phones, iPods and other electronic devices. And California, concerned with the effects, would require manufacturers to phase out the use of these under a bill introduced by a state lawmaker.

Assembly Member Lori Saldana, a Democrat from San Diego unveiled the bill Thursday. The bill would apply to any electronic or battery-operated device. Introduced Wednesday, it is by 2008, the bill would require manufacturers to stop using the substances in devices sold in California.

California already requires manufacturers of video displays in devices to phase out the use of toxic materials. With clout in the state’s Democrat-led legislature, environmental groups support the bill.
