Arizona cave houses new genus of cricket!

a new genus of cricket

A whole new genus of cricket is discovered in the caves in Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in northwestern Arizona. Hats off to Northern Arizona University doctoral candidate J. Judson Wynne and National Park Service researcher Kyle Voyles, for making this rare type of discovery.

Identified by cricket expert Theodore Cohn of San Diego State University, the new genus has yet to be named. Unlike most crickets, which have a pair of non-clasping cerci at their hind ends, the new-found genus has cerci that do clasp, Wynne said.

He further informed that, its reproductive zone is covered by a plate, which is also not found in any other known crickets.
