Arctic sea level falling, defying the global sea trends!

arctic sea level falling

Breaking the global trend of rising waters in the sea, the Arctic sea level has been falling rapidly – it is by a little over 2mm a year! These data are gathered by radar altimeter of the European ERS-2 satellite. Congratulations to the Dutch-UK team for spotting this phenomenon.

As per the warming trends of the Earth’s climate, the sea level across the world is expected to keep on rising. Even though the oceans across the world do not share a uniform height, the scientists are puzzled by the findings.

Co-researcher Dr Seymour Laxon, from University College London explains,

This may provide clues as to what is causing the changes we’re seeing…I think it’s a true statement to say the Arctic Ocean is the least well understood body of water out there.
