Aircraft Exhaust Trails and Climate Change will Abort Telescope Use in 40 Years

ground based astronomy

With astronomers growing crazier exploring the ever happening space, need for ground-based astronomy is growing faster. But amidst all the developments, there is a disappointing future to come. In just 40 years, pollution from aircraft exhaust trails and climate change could make ground-based astronomy impossible, an expert says.

Known as contrails, aircraft condensation trails are can dissipate, becoming indistinguishable from other clouds. If trends in cheap air travel continue, the era of ground astronomy may come to an end much earlier than most had predicted, says Professor Gerry Gilmore. Along with climate change, aircraft will contribute to increased cloud cover.
