42 US States Have More Chemicals in Tap Water Then Thought

tap waterDrinking water in 42 states in the US may be more polluted then what it was with only H20 and fluoride. This has been recorded after an analysis by an environmental group has been made. 141 unregulated chemicals and an additional 119 are found by a survey made by Environmental Working Group. And for this, the Environmental Protection Agency has set health-based limits.

The most common chemicals found were disinfection byproducts, nitrates, chloroform, barium, arsenic and copper. This result has been derived from findings compiled from the states that agreed to provide data, the research-and-advocacy organization collected from 1998 to 2003. Nearly 40,000 water utilities, serving 231 million people provided the data.

EPA is still identifying and considering the potential risks from the unregulated chemicals, for possible future regulations. Nineteen of those chemicals is said to have exceeded EPA‘s unenforced safety guidelines for tap water systems that serve at least 10,000 people, according to the advocacy group.

The group’s findings clearly reveal that the United States is allowing millions of people to be exposed to some chemicals. And for this EPA has either never considered the risks or if it ever has, it made no enforceable limits.
