Last November, we told you about Miranda Kerr’s proposed resignation from Victoria Secret’s stable owing to its rejection of Greenpeace’s campaign. Since the fashion house had been quite inflexible on abandoning the use of toxic chemicals in lingerie production, other supermodels were planning to turn their back on Victoria’s Secret. However, the world-renowned lingerie manufacturer has now promised to eliminate all hazardous chemicals from its products and supply chain by 2020.
Other brands committing to Detox this month include La Senza, Uniqlo, and Benetton, besides Limited Brands. Greenpeace revealed last year that an item of Victoria’s Secret underwear contained a hormone-disrupting phthalate, which could cause serious skin irritations.
According to Greenpeace, concerned consumers’ support is an all-potent force which could compel the textile industry to end its addiction to toxic chemicals. However, we still need to see if brands like Victoria’s Secret would actually turn their words into actions.
