Self-sufficient floating home is a big move for sustainability

To promoteself-sufficient living and homes, Dresden based Fraunhofer institute has fabricated a self-sufficient floating home with the intention of promoting green living. Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (IVI) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) collaborated with medium sized companies like Technical University of Brandenburg (BTU) and Technical University of Dresden (TUD) to make self-sufficient homes commercially and environmentally plausible by 2017.

Energy Independent houseboat

The self-sufficient and green homes is in the shape of houseboats will be built on Lake Geierswalde.  Designed with the aim to boost economy and bring aesthetics to the place, the houseboat will be capable of producingits own water, electricity and heat. Welcoming a new era of living spaces the houseboats will offer a life away from traffic and noise.

Location

Scheduled to be built in the largest lake district of Europe, the houseboats will be built as a residential project in the Lusatian Lake District (Lausitzer Seenland).Termed as the largest artificial lake district in Europe, it has 23 lakes and a surface area of over 32,000 acres.

Dimension

The house extended over two levels is constructed on a 13 x 13-meter steel pontoon and offer 75-sqaure meters of living space on ground and 34-meters on the first floor. Supporting an open terrace of 15-sqaure meter, the houseboats also offers plenty of open space to residents to breathe in fresh air and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Architectural Value

The house supporting space saving design, beautifully unify modern architecture and structural engineering. Designed to be a permanent residential options, the houses will be provided with all the basic amenities required for standard living. To be self-sufficient the houses also comes with solar panels integrated in the building with lithium polymer batteries, to store solar energy for future and emergency use.

Water Supply and cooling system

Currently in development stage, the institutes are building closed loop system for drinking and service water, while for heating and cooling system, the floating homes will come with salt hydrate fireplace that will make sure that the houseboats are warm enough to handle cold nights. The scientist and researches are designing everything with the aim to utilize less space, so that the residents get ample space to continue their daily task.

Encouraging people towards water, the self-catering floating homes will not only offer residents a wonderful opportunity to try sustainable but will also give them a peepto futuristic living.
