Rural women can help retard desertification process

70 percent of rural workers are women

More than one billion people in more than 100 countries are threatened as desertification and land degradation is endangering their livelihood. With this phenomenon rising, the U.N. also estimates an annual economic loss of $6.5 billion.

But, what is the solution to this? – ‘WOMEN’, as the United Nations’ main agency on rural poverty claims. It says that women make up about 70 percent of rural workers across the world and they are the ‘key’ to turning the spread of deserts back!

Lennart Bage, president of the Rome-based International Fund for Agricultural Development, told Reuters in an interview,

And it is women who must be bought into the fight against the spreading sands… Women are very often at the frontline of fighting desertification, or managing land degradation, because very often, in many parts of the world, women are the farmers.

He further added,

Women are crucial, as very often they are the ones responsible for the family for getting fuel wood, water and for tending the fields… They often know a lot about resource management.

But, desertification and land degradation are the ‘still’ prevailing problems that has not been beaten. In some of the poorest parts of the world, it is surly and disappointigly a losing battle.
