India needs China's help to save its tigers

poaching

Conservatonists in India are concerned about the disappearing tiger population here. To effectively arrest this diminishing statistics, China has to co-operate critically and largely – as it has a huge and lucrative market for big cat skins and body parts.

With about 40,000 of the animals a century ago, India, the home to the world’s largest tiger population now has a disappointing dwindling figure of 3,700. Though this is the government figure, some conservationists say the number could be even less than 2,000! The huge demand for tiger skins and parts has led to this rampant poaching, the most lucrative markets being China and Tibet.

To help conserve the tiger, India and China signed an agreement in 1995. However, all that stayed within pen and paper. No one remembers if it has been of little help to the purpose.
