China to Use Desalination to Battle Water Crisis

Known to be one of the world’s driest countries, China’s hundreds of cities suffer from shortages of water, both for domestic and industrial purposes. Bout for water has been aggrandized by the 1.3 billion people’s intense population pressure and the surging economic growth.
To make the ends meet, China plans to produce up to 1 billion liters (250 million gallons) of water per day by 2010. And to meet this desideratum, the country has decided to use desalinated seawater to combat water shortages in coastal areas. The Finance Ministry and other agencies call for desalination plants to supply 16 to 24 percent of water used in coastal by the stipulated period, the official Xinhua News Agency said. According to Xinhua, production of water per day is projected to rise to 2.5-3 billion liters (650-800 million gallons) by 2020.
