Beyond the Bag eco-fashion show to flaunt recycled banner couture

It’s definitely enlightening to haul out useful information from banners, hoardings and pamphlets displayed on city street signs, at corporate events or served within newspapers. However, we often tend to forget the environmental nuisance created out of them when they are not pushed down the recycling lane. Simon Fraser University students are leading a group of local high school students from Surrey (Guildford Park), North Delta (Seaquam) and Vancouver (Eric Hamber) to recycle old nylon banners into fashion accessories. Considering the fact that nylon doesn’t biodegrade fully into natural elements even after decades of slumber in landfills, the students’ initiative is a mentionable one for sure.

The showcase event is an initiative of Enactus SFU, a student-governed not-for-profit organization. The Enactus SFU students also invited the support of local fashion students from Kwantlen Polytechnic University and John Casablanca’s Institute to lead workshops in more than schools in Metro Vancouver. Beyond the Bags’ Facebook page reports that the student team will display their creations at the Beyond the Bag Eco-Fashion Showcase this Friday, March 1, which will run from 5: 30 to 8 p.m. on the mezzanine level of the university, at Central City.
