Agency Failed To Monitor Biotech Crops Properly: USDA Investigators Postulate

us department of agricultureThe report was released just before Christmas. It mentioned that the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s investigative arm disclosed that it failed to monitor thousands of acres of experimental biotechnology crops properly.

USDA did not evaluate applications to grow experimental crops thoroughly, and did not even ensure that the genetically engineered plants were destroyed after experiments. The report by the department’s inspector general said this. The report further claimed that the agency, in several cases, didn’t even know where so-called field trials were located!

“The system has been set up practically as a self-reporting system,” said Greg Jaffe, biotech director for the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest. “It’s a ‘don’t look, don’t find’ policy.”
