11,000 football field-sized 'New ice island' formed by Canada's Arctic snapping!

on may 30 2006 9

A part of an island south of the North Pole has collapsed free! A giant ice shelf — the size of 11,000 football fieldshas snapped free from the island. Using satellite imagery, the scientists have spotted this phenomenon, which within one hour of breaking free, formed as a new ice island! It has left a trail of icy boulders floating in its wake.

Traveling to the newly formed ice island, Warwick Vincent of Laval University to study the Arctic conditions could not believe what he has seen! The surprised Vincent said,

This is a dramatic and disturbing event. It shows that we are losing remarkable features of the Canadian North that have been in place for many thousands of years. We are crossing climate thresholds, and these may signal the onset of accelerated change ahead.

Being one of six major shelves remaining in Canada’s Arctic, the ice shelf was packed with ancient ice that is more than 3,000 years old and floats on the sea without being connected to land.
